NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Our Jack of the Week is familiar with East Texas a John Tyler graduate who now stars at linebacker for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. Derrick Choice is a sophomore sensation who played in twelve games last year as a freshman and now is making strides to become a young leader on the team's defense.
Last week Choice record 5 assisted tackles, recovered a fumble and had an interception that was nullified only because of a holding penalty on Mcneese State resulting in a safety and two points for the Lumberjacks.
For Choice he made the right choice after suffering a back injury to come back in and keep making plays.
"First half I was suffering from an injury that I had all week with my back at halftime, I got some treatment on it I came back out in the second half and tried to play hard and just fought," Choice said.
With the Lumberjacks beating Mcneese State with their defense instead of outscoring their opponents like most of us our accustom to seeing in previous years Choice said the defensive leaders decided the time has come to be stout on defense.
"Basically we just we just came together and we were like we are tired of this being all put back on our shoulders we don't everyone saying it's the defense fault that we losing the games so if you got good defense you can win and that's how we been playing this whole season," Choice Said.
Stephen F. Austin will have number 45 roaming the middle of the field for the next two plus years. He is the Jack of the Week for the Lumberjacks they will play at Central Arkansas Saturday night at 6pm both teams are 4-1 and both ranked in the FCS Top 25.
