NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Stephen F. Austin volleyball coach Debbie Humphreys reached 500 career wins on Saturday night by beating UTSA in five games.
"I'm honestly more relieved than excited," Humphreys said. "I am glad to have it behind us so we can focus on the rest of the season. It's nice to get it done on the first opportunity. We were certainly aware of it. I am pleased with the effort by the girls and the outcome."
With Humphreys winning so many matches one would think that she would have more losses on her resume but in her 22nd year of coaching she has only lost 226 games so she has nearly doubled her wins to losses.
Humphrey's is the all time wins leader in the Southland Conference she also is one of only 35 active coaches in the country that has 500 or more victories in their careers.
"The biggest thing about this match is the way we responded and won a five-game match," said Humphreys, who is now 500-226 in 21-plus years at SFA. "The girls did a great job of stepping up when they needed to. They wanted to win this match, and they showed it."
The ladyjacks will play at Sam Houston State on Friday and then conclude their two game road trip with a trip to Lamar on Saturday. Stephen F. Austin will return home to host Texas State on October 29th.
