LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - Aboard the U.S.S. Macon Island during World War II, Frank Allen fought for his country throughout the South Pacific, all before the age of 21. At the age of 18 Allen joined the Navy and was soon involved in the invasions of the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinowa.

The biggest danger to small carriers like the Macon were the Japanese Kamikazes, or suicide planes. They were a constant threat, especially during the Okinowa invasion.

Sitting on the porch of his home near Lindale is a far cry from fending off Kamikaze attacks. But, the ever present flag flying from his porch, is a symbol for Frank Allen of the three years before his 21st birthday when he fought to keep American free.
