Man pleads to endangering a child, gets 5-year sentence

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A man who was already on parole for a Cherokee County murder pleaded guilty Tuesday to the charge of endangering a child and agreed to a five-year prison sentence.

John Allen was on trial for sexual assault of two children but before the day was over, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

District Attorney Clyde Herrington said a key witness for the defense failed to show for the trial, making it tougher for the state to convict Allen on two counts of child molestation, which were dismissed.

"At least it takes him out of society for five years," Herrington said.

Allen was arrested in June 2008 for the crime.
