Good Morning East Texas Headlines 11-06-09


Here's a look at what's coming up today on Good Morning East Texas:  The death toll is now 13 in that deadly shooting at Fort Hood. One of the people injured in the shooting died overnight. Good Morning East Texas' Morgan Chesky is at Fort Hood and will have the latest updates throughout the morning.

Plus, a suspected con artist is in an East Texas jail, but she will soon be returned to Oklahoma to face criminal charges. Investigators suspect the woman of having at least 30 aliases. They believed she tried to bilk two East Texans out of their hard-earned cash, but authorities say those victims are not pressing charges.

And Texas has put Khristian Oliver to death for the murder of a man in Nacogdoches County in 1998. His lawyers had appealed to Governor Rick Perry for a 30-day stay of execution. Oliver's case gained national attention because jurors consulted a Bible when considering his punishment.

A 2008 graduate of Gladewater High School was very close to the violence when Thursday's shooting in Fort Hood, occurred.  Angelia Johnson was in the Readiness Center at Fort Hood when the gunfire broke out.

Investigators said she has a dark and devious history of scamming others, especially men for whatever she wants.

Cheat stirs fishing community

A Texas angler was recently caught cheating at a major fishing tournament.


FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - Officials say a 13th person has died after a gunman opened fire yesterday afternoon at Texas' Fort Hood. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a suspect in the mass shooting that wounded 30, is on a ventilator and unconscious after being shot four times. In the early chaos of the shooting, authorities believed they had killed the shooter.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - As officials try to piece together what led to yesterday's shooting rampage at Texas' Fort Hood that left 13 dead, the FBI, local police and other agencies have searched the apartment of the Army psychiatrist suspected in the attack. Authorities had evacuated Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's Killeen apartment complex before the search. Officials haven't said what was found.

WASHINGTON (AP) - On the eve of the House's expected vote on health care overhaul legislation, Democrats are scrambling to secure enough votes to pass the $1.2 trillion measure. The bill embraces President Barack Obama's goals of extending health coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and putting tough new restrictions on insurance companies.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is set to sign a bill providing tax incentives to prospective homebuyers and extending unemployment benefits to the longtime jobless. Obama is signing the $24 billion bill as the government prepares to release last month's unemployment rate, which is expected to hit 9.9 percent.

LONDON (AP) - Elton John has been released from a London hospital after being treated for flu and an E. coli bacterial infection. The singer's spokesman says the 62-year-old plans to resume his suspended tour, and will be in California for a Nov. 14 concert with Billy Joel.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Texas has executed a 32-year-old inmate for fatally beating and shooting an East Texas man during a burglary in 1998. Khristian Oliver began praying as he was given lethal drugs last night. His case drew attention because jurors consulted a Bible to justify his death sentence.     

ELDORADO, Texas (AP) - A polygamist group member from the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado has been convicted of sexually assaulting a child. The charge against Raymond Jessop stemmed from his alleged marriage to an underage girl.
