Lufkin restaurant gives free meal to veterans

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Some area restaurants showed their appreciation for veterans Wednesday by offering them a chance to fill their stomach.

Applebee's is offering meals "on the house" for veterans and all active-duty military until midnight. One veteran said he's thankful for places like this that take the time to recognize them for their service, but as a former Fort Hood soldier, the recent incident is not far from his mind.

"My heart goes out to the families for those that are wounded and also those that were killed," said Army Veteran Ben Wells.  "I know it's a tragedy for all of them. I was stationed in Fort Hood and I know that Fort very well."

Also, Golden Corral will be offering free buffet meals including beverage and dessert to current military and veterans on Monday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
