BREAKING NEWS: Alert Level Going Back To Yellow

After three weeks at orange, the nation's terror alert status is going back to yellow. Bush administration officials say a formal announcement is expected later today.

Those officials cite two reasons for the move: the end of the Muslim Hajj (hahj) or pilgrimage period, and unspecified intelligence indicating an attack is a bit less likely. However, on the government's five-color scale, yellow still denotes a "significant" risk of a terrorist strike -- so officials say Americans should remain vigilant.

This is the second time the alert status has gone to orange and back to yellow. But this time, the heightened alert coincided with a new Homeland Security education campaign that encouraged Americans to prepare for a possible attack. That had many US families stocking up on food, water and duct tape.
