LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Friday morning the Lufkin Salvation Army kicked-off the 2009 Red Kettle Campaign at Brookshire Brothers.

The Salvation Army said this is the only time during the year they hit the streets to fundraise. Their goal is $70,000. Captain Luis Melendez said he knows it's a lot of money, but he has confidence the community will give generously.

"There is a lot of turmoil with the economy, but I believe there are a lot of good hearts and people that are willing to give," said Melendez.  "Every penny counts, every dollar amounts to our ultimate goal, which is to take that funding and turn it around to people in need in our community."

Melendez said all the money stays in Angelina County. Friday it didn't take long for people to get in the holiday spirit.

You can give too at one of the 16 locations in the Lufkin area, including Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Sam's, and Belk's.
