LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Hundreds of temporary jobs will soon be available in East Texas.

The U.S. Census is currently taking applications, trying to fill the 111,000 jobs in Texas. Temporary Census workers will make between $10 to $12 an hour and are hired to make sure everyone in their community is accounted for.

"These are good jobs for our community and again those that get the jobs are able to put back in the community by contributing to helping us get our representation in the federal dollars that can be allotted to us," said Charles Teel, partnership specialist with U.S. Census.

Teel said those who get the jobs will begin in December and work through July. Although these are temporary jobs, Teel said it's possible to segue into a full-time position.

Before you head over to a testing site for a Census job, call 866-861-2010 to arrange an appointment. A Census spokesperson said you must call the number above in order to apply for the temporary position. For your planning purposes, here's a list of testing locations for Census jobs:

  • Lufkin Chamber of Commerce - Dec. 1
  • Moscow First Baptist Church- Dec. 8
  • Woodville St. Paul Church- Dec. 3
