H1N1 vaccine available in Houston County

HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (PRESS RELEASE)- The H1N1 flu vaccine is now available in Houston County for persons in several high risk groups. The vaccine is being administered by appointment only at the Texas Department of State Health Services, located at 1034 South Fourth Street in Crockett.

Eventually, the vaccine is expected to be available for any citizen who wants to receive it.  Because of the current limited supply, the shots are only available to persons in high risk groups at this time.   Those high risk groups include the following:

• Pregnant women

• Children 6 months through 4 years of age

• People 5 years through 64 years of age with high-risk health conditions

• Health care workers who provide direct patient care

• Close contacts of infants 6 months or younger

Individuals in the Houston County that fall into one of these priority groups may call the Department of State Health Services at 936-544-3559 to schedule an appointment for the H1N1 vaccination.  Please remember vaccinations will be given by appointment only.

The vaccine is your best defense against the H1N1 flu – but it is not your only defense. There are some very simple things that everyone can do right now to help stop the spread of the flu.  The main goal is to keep from getting the flu. If you do get it, the next goal is to keep from spreading it to others.

• Cover coughs or sneezes with the elbow or a tissue (not with your hands).

•  Frequently wash hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

• Stay home if sick and consult a physician.
