Westbound side of Tulane U-turn bridge will not open before Christmas

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – As the Highway 59 construction continues, TxDOT said they are still running on-schedule to finish around October 2010.

Also the eastbound side of the Tulane U-turn bridge is still open, but TxDOT said drivers need to start using it correctly. The westbound side is closed, and although it was set to be open before Christmas, it won't be opening by then due to safety concerns.

"When the guys are out there working, you have concerns because you have traffic going in too many directions, and also whenever we have the Loop traffic on the westbound frontage road, that's more traffic trying to feed into an already congested area," said TxDOT Public Information Officer Kathi White.

Also, TxDOT reports more closures. Tuesday through Thursday, the southbound direct connector bridge at U.S. 59 and Loop 287 on the south side of Lufkin will be closed at 8 p.m. each night and re-open at 6 a.m. the next day.
