Bipartisan discussion needed says Congressman

TYLER, TX (KTRE) - In a rare weekend meeting, President Obama met with Democratic senators, where he urged those divided on key issues to put aside their differences and pass health care legislation before Christmas.

But, U.S. Congressman Louie Gohmert says too much has been done behind closed doors and a bipartisan discussion is needed.

"The things that are being proposed in the Senate bill and the House bill are not the way to do it," said Gohmert. "People who have not read this bill have no idea the kind of federal intrusion into their lives this will bring. Merry Christmas, we just brought the government into your life like never before."

As the President pushes to pass a historic health care plan, Congressman Gohmert says it will be the mistake of this nation's lifetime.

"It is just one bad idea after another," he said.

He says there is a need for health care reform, but too much discussion is taking place behind closed doors - it is becoming a partisan issue.

"President Obama made a wonderful promise back before he was elected president," Gohmert began. "He said, 'We need to have open dialogue - open debate.' But, it has not happened and it needs to happen. Something that will change America for the good or bad. It needs to be open."

And, if they want to meet their self-imposed Christmas deadline, Gohmert says it's not just members of opposite parties that need to compromise. Senate Democrats remain torn on issues like the public option, and now, abortion.

"But that is such a matter of principal and of the heart and a moral issue," said Gohmert. "Morals are not where you compromise. Dollars and cents...those are where you can compromise."

Not willing to strike a compromise on this bill, Gohmert said it will take more to please Americans like himself.

"We need insurance companies and the government out of the health care management business so that doctors and patients can make their own decisions," he said.
