BRENHAM – The Angelina College Lady Roadrunners will head into the holiday break a perfect 13-0 after Wednesday's 75-70 win over Blinn's Lady Bucs, but the Roadrunners suffered their first loss in conference play following an 83-81 overtime loss to the Buccaneers.
Lady Roadrunners 75, Blinn 70
Danyetta Williams scored on a pair of put backs within 15 seconds, allowing the Lady Roadrunners to regain the lead, and Tyeka Ranton and Carenn Baylor hit a pair of three-pointers in keeping AC (13-0, 3-0) undefeated with a 75-70 win over the Lady Bucs.
Ranton finished the night with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Tiara George added 13 points and 10 boards, and Baylor finished with 11 points for the 13th-ranked Lady 'Runners.
Blinn's Jaleesa Thomas hit four three-pointers on her way to a 14-point effort. Roshell Barnes added 13 and LaChandra Johnson 12 for Blinn, now 7-7, 0-3 on the season.
The Lady Bucs took their first lead of the game on Johnson's three from the top of the key with 3:50 remaining. But Williams, the freshman from College Station, maneuvered her way to a pair of offensive rebounds and scores to push the Lady Roadrunners back on top. Ranton's two free throws with 20 seconds left sent AC into the Christmas break with an unblemished record.
Blinn's smaller lineup proved lightning-quick, and the Lady Roadrunners struggled early to run a consistence offense. AC's guards, accustomed to moving around screens, instead found Lady Bucs in their way on every play. Fortunately for the Lady 'Runners, Blinn struggled on a cold-shooting night: The Lady Bucs finished the contest converting just 26 percent of their field-goal tries.
"We knew they were a very good team at playing man-to-man defense, and we had a little trouble adjusting to their quickness," head coach Byron Coleman said. "But that left our post players in single coverage, and I thought they did a good job capitalizing when they had the opportunity. Tiara George had a good game moving the ball around to give other players a chance to score."
The Lady Roadrunners won't play again until New Year's Day, when they'll travel to Waco for a pair of non-conference games.
Blinn 83, Roadrunner 81 (OT)
Blinn's Kahlil McDonald finished Wednesday's game against Angelina College with 34 points – but his last bucket did the most damage.
McDonald hit a fall away jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the Bucs to an 83-81 win and handing the Roadrunners their first loss in conference play.
McDonald scored his team's last four points after teammate Deuce Nichols' three pointer tied the game at 79-79 with 1:35 to play. AC's Joe Mitchell scored on a put back to give the 'Runners two-point lead at 1:03; but hit two free throws before nailing the game winner.
AC's Takoby Jackson finished with 20 points to lead the Roadrunners, now 8-6, 3-1 on the season. Ron Steward added 18, and Adrick McKinney and Trent Brantley finished with 12 points each.
Blinn sent the game to overtime by erasing a five-point deficit in the final 26 seconds of regulation. Buc guard Jarrell Mills hit a one-hander with three ticks on the clock to send the contest to an extra frame.
