LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The demolition of the swimming pool at Winston Park in Lufkin began Wednesday with crews removing concrete, bricks and mortar that once symbolized the pride of northeast Lufkin.
The pool area at Winston Park has been vacant for more than 2 years and is fast becoming an eyesore. City leaders decided to take action. The swimming pool area and the building next to it will be removed and the ground filled in with dirt and leveled. The entire process should take about five days if the weather permits.
"Part of our Parks Master Plan is to construct a new handicap and special needs playground at Winston Park," said Steve Floyd, Public Works Director for the City of Lufkin. "The playground will be assembled sometime after the first of the year. Long range, the city plans to create a walking trail and add a soccer field there."
Lufkin city leaders decided to officially close Winston Park pool last April. For more than 6 decades, East Texans have enjoyed the city pool, but with the construction of a more modern pool at the Lufkin Boys and Girls Club and the re-opening of the swimming pool at Jones Park on Martin Luther King Blvd., the city thought it best to close Winston Park pool, which had become costly to maintain and repair.
East Texans will miss the historic Winston Park pool. Already some people who live in the neighborhood nearby have expressed sadness as they watch the crews dismantle it, however, public swimming will still be available for area residents. The city has an agreement with the Boys and Girls Club that allows public swimming during designated hours and in return the city pays $12,500 each quarter.
The pool at the Boys and Girls Club is an indoor facility which is located at 909 S. Angelina Street in Lufkin. The pool is heated and is open year round. It has eight lanes, electronic starting blocks, and an electronic scoreboard. It also serves as a practice and meet facility for local swim teams.
