Clara Flores is processing overtime logs and receipts that fill the many boxes piled in her office. They're from individuals and agencies who helped in the Columbia recovery effort.
"We're looking at trying to do reimbursements daily to every two or three days," says Clara Flores. "Just as we can get groups of similar category items, we can get that to the FEMA representatives."
Flores is pleased with how quickly the channels of bureaucracy are moving.
"We have tapped some of the local jurisdictions pretty heavily," says Carlos Mitchell. "We have a program where we almost instantly give them some money. However, it still has to go to the state, and the state writes the checks."
In addition to processing local agencies' expenditures, there are those submitted by police and sheriff's departments from across the state. Their representatives also helped out.
