Huntington girls squeak by Center in district opener, 38-32

HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) - The Huntington Lady Devils held off a strong effort from Center in the second half to take the district opener, 38-32.

Down 17-8 after the first half, Center pulled within two points on three occasions in the fourth quarter but never could get closer than that.

Following a Huntington basket to put the Lady Devils up 34-30 with 2:07 left in the game, and a Center timeout, Lady Rider Chakelia Moore tried to in bound the ball by rolling it to a teammate so no time would run off the clock. However, she must've felt she did not roll it fast enough and was whistled for a violation when she tried to roll it harder to her teammate.

Huntington followed the turnover with a Claire Nerren jumper and a pair of free throws from Alicia Morris to seal the game.

"I'm just glad to get out with a victory," Huntington head coach Michelle Brookshire said. "We had a good first half but struggled in the second half but now we just have to get ready for Carthage on Friday."

Chandler Modisette led all scorers with 18 points. Other scorers for the Lady Devils were Ashley Wright (12), Morgan Arnold (6), Nerren (4) and Cassidy Ivy, Presley Henry, Morgan Brown and Morris (2).

Swindle and Moore each scored 11 points for Center while LaSaundra Miller scored 5 and Jalecia Hill had 3.
