NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Authorities have apprehended a man accused in the murder of his estranged Nacogdoches wife, according to the Nacogdoches County sheriff.
According to Sheriff Thomas Kerss, John Presley was attempting to cross the U.S. border into Mexico.
Charlotte Marie Mohr Mallow, 40, of Pasadena, was with Presley and is being detained for questioning. Kerss said his office is in the process of obtaining a warrant for her arrest on a charge of hindering apprehension.
Stephanie Presley's body was discovered at about 9 a.m. Thursday in a wooded area in Nacogdoches County, near the Rusk County line.
The family of Stephanie Fowler Presley has no doubt who killed their daughter and sister. They say John Presley is an alcoholic and heroin user with evil ways.
"He's broken into the house several times, taken things from her," her mother, Gayla Cunningham, said. "He's also made comments that said he would kill her before anything else would go on."
Stephanie married John three years ago. The couple's relationship began more than a decade earlier. The family says John is a schizophrenic and bipolar. They recall when Stephanie used her nursing skills to save his life.
"He shot his self once before and did it in front of my daughter and she saved him," Cunningham said. "A few months ago he did an overdose of drugs."
For the last eight months John has lived in Pasadena where his new girlfriend lives. His return to Nacogdoches always worried the family. Stephanie's last text was to a friend. Today it sounds as if it's a plea for help.
"It said John just walked up on her," Cunningham said. "And after that no one else has ever heard from her."
That was around 8:30 p.m.. Around two in the morning John made a call to his sister.
"And was very drunk and said some things and that's the last word anybody had heard from him," Cunningham said.
The last two days will forever replace happier Christmases when the entire family gathered around the tree.
