Man dies in Hemphill mobile home fire early Saturday morning

HEMPHILL, TX (KTRE)- A man was killed in a mobile home fire in the Hemphill area, early Saturday morning.

At about 4 a.m. neighbors called 911 and fire marshals quickly arrived to find the mobile home off of state highway 184, just three miles west of Hemphill, engulfed in flames.

Fire officials were able to put the fire out in time to spare the majority of the home, but they were unable to rescue the man living there.

Billy Ebarb, 40, a lifelong resident of the area, died in his home. Rescuers tried to get to him, but by but the time they found him in his bedroom, it was too late.

Ebarb lived with his 12-year-old son, who was staying at a friend's house during the time of the fire. Ebarb was the only one in his home at the time, and no other injuries were reported.

According to Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox, the cause of the fire is still under investigation although it appears to be accidental.

Ebarb's body was sent to Jefferson County Morgue for an autopsy.
