Therapy dogs bring joy to Salvation Army Adult Day Center

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE)- Lewis Stubblefied couldn't wait to share his excitement about his monthly visit with a group of therapy dogs at the Salvation Army Adult Day Center.

"I enjoyed the collie and golden retriever," said Stubblefield.

He's not alone.

"I love dogs. I raised dogs myself," said visitor Rose Simmons.

"Oh yeah, I like them all," said Oscar Kennedy.

Owners bring their registered therapy dogs. They are trained to do tricks and provide good company.

Like 4-year-old Rosie, a former rescue dog. Now receiving plenty of love and giving it back to others around her.

Donna Work has volunteered with therapy dog groups for years, visiting, hospitals, schools and adult day centers like this one.

"We visit the patients, and the residents, and the family members, and other people who are visiting there and try to brighten up their day," said Work.

Many visitors struggle with mental and physical disabilities and the dogs offer a calming presence.

"Sometimes it's not even about the dogs at all. It's the dogs being an ice breaker just to get to visit with somebody," said Work.

It's a time that these men and women look forward to. When it's over, they're counting down the days until their next visit.

Work says all of their work is based on volunteering, and welcomes others who are interested in registering their dogs. If your dog is at least a year old and people friendly, you can contact Work on how to join a group in your area. Donna Work's contact number is: 936-637-2002.
