Affidavit reveals possible motive in Huntington murder

HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) - A man may have killed a Huntington man because he was making a pass at his girlfriend, according to an arrest affidavit.

Authorities arrested Fielder, 39, in Quitman Wednesday night. The mother of Gary Lynn Defratus, 47, found her son dead outside her Huntington-area home two days before the arrest.

According to the affidavit, Fielder told a witness he was going to confront Defratus because he thought he had made a pass at his girlfriend. The witness later received several text messages from Fielder's girlfriend, expressing concern that Fielder had gone to Defratus' house and had not returned. She then asked the witness to go check on Fielder.

The witness went to the residence at 12:45 a.m. on Dec. 19, the affidavit stated. He met a "frantic" Fielder at the door who said he confronted Defratus and a confrontation took place in the living room. Fielder then said Defratus ran to his mother's house, which was on the same property, and he needed to leave before the police got there, the affidavit stated.

The witness then said he tried to calm Fielder down and figure out what had happened but that Fielder got in his car and left, the affidavit stated.

The witness then yelled out Defratus' name to check on him but got no response. The witness said he left, thinking it was only a fight and did not realize the severity of the crime, the affidavit stated.
