LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – A new year marks a fresh start for countless tornado victims. The American Red Cross is here to help them start over.
This Monday, Red Cross volunteers are urging all tornado victims to apply for financial assistance. The funding is not an end all, but is intended to put people back on their feet with a warm roof over their head.
"We're going to focus on temporary housing, so if they rent a house and their house is not livable then we want to try and assist them with the first month's rent," said Glenna Harkness, Service Delivery Manager for American Red Cross. "If you own your house, we want to try to help you with some building supplies."
The American Red Cross is not a government-run program. The organization relies on donations from community members to keep it up and running. Volunteers said they hope to assist all tornado victims by the end of next week.
