LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – The most exciting place to be in Lufkin on New Year's Day was probably the second floor waiting room at Woodland Heights hospital. Family and friends waited all morning and most of the afternoon for Lufkin's first baby born in 2010.
Both grandmas, the paternal grandpa and even the family's pastor waited for the baby girl to arrive. The guys in the family made the waiting room home for the day and even watched some football to pass the time.
By early afternoon the nurse started bringing more regular updates.
"She's nine centimeters! One more to go!" exclaimed one of the nurses.
"I'm so excited I can't think straight. Trying to be in there for her. I can't wait to see her!" said maternal grandma, Karen Grozier.
A new baby, a new year and new family. It's a new beginning for 2010.
"This year is going to be a lot better than last year," said paternal grandma, Penny Kelly.
"It means good things for us," said new dad, Justin Kelly.
Lufkin's first baby this year, Chyanne Rene Kelly greeted 2010 at 3:10 pm at 6 pounds, 1 ounce and 20 inches long.
"It's amazing. I never thought. I figured I would come in and be second or maybe third or something... It's wonderful. It's amazing. It's a total different experience,"gushed new mom, D'Anne Kelly.
The baby and new parents are doing well. They are excited that not only was their baby girl the first born in Lufkin in 2010, but also beat a Nacogdoches baby by 30 minutes.
