POLLOK, TX (KTRE) - The Central Lady Bulldogs held Carthage to 12 second-half points on the way to a 47-30 win Tuesday night.
Carthage kept the game close as late as the end of the second quarter. But with the score tied at 18 with 2:19 left, Central's Ceona Brooks scored on a jumper, layup and free throw, followed by a Valerie Castillo layup to give Central a 25-18 halftime lead.
Both teams got defensive in the second half, but Central limited Carthage to five in the third quarter and seven in the fourth to give Central the lead.
"We worked on a new zone yesterday to guard their post and it really worked," Central head coach Kristen Belshaw said. "I'm really proud of them and thought they did well."
Amber Carver led Central with 14 points, followed by Brooks (13), Castillo (10), and Lauren Curry, Sara Stringer, Richel Moore, Morgan Murphy and Kashauna Mattox (2).
Nikki Bryant led Carthage with 14 points.
In the boys game, Central stayed close to Carthage for a half but Carthage slowly pulled away the rest of the way to take a 60-44 win.
Scorers for Central were Radley Horn and Kry Jackson (9), Nolan Arnold (8), Kaleb Boles (5), Chris Champion and Chancey Parker (4), Colton Boles and Blake Murray (2) and Chase Allen (1).
