Perry, Hutchison prepare to debate

By Jeff Awtrey - email

UNDATED (KTRE) - After years of build-up, the first showdown is around the corner. Kay Bailey Hutchison vs. Rick Perry.

Hutchison, the senior senator from Texas, contemplated running against her fellow Republican in the 2006 election, but decided to keep Texas Republicans from making the tough decision. Instead, Perry won re-election, taking 39 percent of the popular vote over three other opponents.

Republicans have anticipated this showdown since December of 2008, when the senator announced a potential run. Perry played it cool, saying he doubted she would take the leap, but that all changed last august when Hutchison made her formal announcement.

Polls show Perry has a fair advantage, some showing a double-digit lead.

But that could change Thursday night, as the two face off in a debate.

Wharton County Republican Chair Debra Medina will join them. Medina is definitely the less heralded candidate of the three, but will try to make her voice heard Thursday night.

KTRE.com will stream the debate in its entirety Thursday at 7 p.m.
