Rig-van wreck backs up Highway 59 traffic

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A two-vehicle wreck at the College Drive-U.S. 59 South intersection slowed traffic to a crawl during lunch hour Tuesday.

According to Lufkin Police Officer Devin Trotti, Richard McAbier, 70, was driving his 18-wheeler in the northbound lane of U.S. 59 South at 12:41 p.m. when he rear-ended a trailer attached to a van driven by Terry Cooper, 48, of Kentucky. The trailer smashed into the van but nobody was injured in the wreck.

Hazmat responded to the scene to treat a gas leak.

Cooper, who was on his way to a Kilgore flea market, was carrying laundry baskets full of merchandise, which was strewn around the highway.

Traffic on both sides of the highway was diverted to one lane each as responders cleaned up the wreck.

McAbier was cited for failure to control speed, Trotti said.
