LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Hundreds of patients are anesthetized each year in East Texas and the final week of January one local hospital is recognizing the medical staff charged with the task.

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists provide anesthesia and related care before and after surgical, therapeutic, diagnostic, and obstetrical procedures. One nurse anesthetists said his job gives him a unique opportunity to provide one-on-one care to each patient.

"The most important part of any anesthetic is just vigilance, paying attention to the patient's vital signs, and paying attention to the patient's presentation clinically," said Memorial Medical Center CRNA Ryan Johnson.  "Staying on top of it because it is real surgery, real life or death."

He said most people don't realize that there have been nurse anesthetists as long as there has been anesthesia, even before there were doctors dedicated to the practice.
