Burke Center postponing opening of boarding school

HUDSON, TX (KTRE) - The Burke Center says they have decided to postpone a boarding school project until the economy improves.

The organization says after the governor called all state agencies to look at cutting state-funded programs, they felt it would not be prudent to go through with the Peavy Switch project at this time.

However, the Burke Center says they still want to open the facility in the future.  The former Peavy Switch facility sits vacant at this time.  It's located on county road 2497 in Hudson.

The original plan was to open the site as a place to help mentally ill fourth through sixth grade boys that are non-violent offenders. The proposed charter school treatment facility was met with opposition from the Hudson ISD superintendent and some parents who worried the district would be burdened with providing services to the troubled children.
