VA shuttle begins in Houston County

Houston, TX (PRESS RELEASE) – Veterans in Houston County who need transportation to receive medical care can take advantage of a new shuttle service that begins February 1.  The VA shuttle is free.  It will be operated by the Brazos Transit District.

The free VA shuttle will initially serve Houston, Angelina and Nacogdoches counties, and it is hoped that it will expand into other counties in the future.  It will operate in Houston County on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week.

The service will pick up veterans at their homes anywhere in Houston County and provide round trip transportation for medical appointments at the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic in Lufkin, or the Michael Debakey VA Medical Center in Houston.  Those veterans who have appointments in Houston will ride the shuttle to Lufkin, where they will transfer to a larger motor coach that will transport them on to Houston.

This new service was made possible by a $600,000 appropriation by the U. S. Congress.  Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt says a lot of people deserve credit for making it a reality.

"Senator John Cornyn took the lead in getting this appropriation through the Congress.  Congressman Louie Gohmert led the way in the House, and the entire Texas delegation supported it.  Our former congressman, Charlie Wilson, provided a lot of encouragement.  And former Houston County Judge Chris von Doenhoff was also instrumental through his role as a board member of Brazos Transit."

"We are very fortunate to be one of the first three counties where this service is available," he added.  "I encourage all of our veterans in Houston County to take advantage of this service."

To schedule a ride, veterans should call the VA Outpatient Clinic in Lufkin and ask for Jeff Davis.  His direct number is 936-671-4363.  The toll-free telephone number for the Clinic is 1-800-209-3120.

In addition to the new VA shuttle, Brazos Transit also provides public transportation for all citizens in Houston County through a Demand and Response system.  There is a nominal fee for this service.  For more information contact Brazos Transit at 1-800-272-0039.
