Proud Of East Texas: Mike Fletcher

For 29 years, Mike Fletcher rode bucking broncs on the rodeo circuit, even reaching his goal of becoming a world champion. But these days it's his "Spur On Country Church" in a converted hay barn near Mineola that gives him the most satisfaction.

Horses have been part of Fletcher's life as far back as he can remember and he still breaks horses and trains roping horses in the arena on the church grounds. But Fletcher's life changed when he and his wife Darlene attended a "Cowboys For Christ" meeting in 1988.

The Fletchers founded their church in Florida but when their youngest son Caleb died of pneumonia, they traded their Florida land for land in Texas to be near their oldest son Mikey, who is also a professional cowboy.

Fletcher says you don't have to wear cowboy boots to come to the "Spur On Country Church". Everybody's invited. The church is located on State Highway 37, four and a half miles North of Mineola.
