LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – An empty lot at 1805 North John Reddit could be the future site of an 80 family affordable housing apartment complex. Something the city really needs.
A compromise is keeping plans for affordable housing moving forward.
"If we hadn't received approval last night then our application process would be dead," said Clayton Dark, Jr., Attorney for Lufkin PC, LLC.
Lufkin's City Council wanted to work things out with Lufkin PC - the company planning the complex.
"There is always a need for affordable housing," said Bruce Green, City of Lufkin Attorney.
The company sought the city council's support before applying for a state housing grant, but City Attorney Bruce Green tapped the brakes.
"I had recommended we hold off until we get documents... in this case was that the company had not been formed up," said Green.
The community's support is needed before the March first application deadline.
"It elevates our position in the competition for these funds with other applications. So if you have the municipality on board as a partner in your application... it gets a better chance for getting approval," said Dark.
The company knows what its talking about.
"He [owner of Lufkin PC] as already received approval and moving forward with Pioneer Crossing on Gobbler's Knob which is affordable housing for seniors," said Dark.
Without the agreement reached by the city council, the project wouldn't move forward.
"The principal was here, we discussed it, resolved the matter so the council gave support resolution," described Green.
The project will bring jobs to Lufkin, starting with an estimated eight million dollar construction plan.
"We bid out locally to construct the facility. Then there are jobs for the management of the facility and the maintenance of the facility," said Dark.
The agreement involves the city receiving certain documents including proof of the company's LLC in the next couple of weeks. If the application is approved by the state - Lufkin could see more affordable housing within a couple of years.
