Ladyjacks add 11 on national signing day

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team announced Wednesday the addition of 11 student-athletes. Seven prep recruits signed national letters of intent on Wednesday, adding to the four collegiate transfers already secured by the SFA program for the 2010 season.
This group comes on the heels of a 15-player class a year ago that stands as the largest in the SFA soccer program's history. Third-year head coach George Van Linder said that as he has filled out his roster over the last two seasons, he and his staff have been able to narrow the focus in regards to recruiting.
"Precision is the buzz word we use with our staff," Van Linder said. "We were really looking to find players who fit into the specific needs that we have. We're fortunate to have a good core already in place with our team, and these players we're bringing in will hopefully fill some of those specific needs."
Among the prep signees, SFA will bring in three midfielders, two forwards, a defender and a goalkeeper. The group of transfer players includes two forwards and a pair of players who are listed as both midfielder and defender.
"Our goal was to go out and get a great class that complements the players we already have here," Van Linder said. "I feel like we did that with the players we were able to sign."
The freshman class includes five Texans, one player from Arizona and a Canadian. All four transfers are native Texans, with three of the four returning home from out-of-state universities. Six of the 12 incoming players bring Olympic Developmental Program experience with them, and Melissa Gaudet is a product of the Canadian National Training Center.
Van Linder said the quality of experience of the incoming players keeps improving with each new crop, which can lead to more playing time for first-year players.
"Each year it seems like it's becoming more and more of a battle for playing time," he said. "It wouldn't surprise me to see two or three of these players getting major, major minutes in their freshman year."
