WELLS, TX (KTRE) - The Wells City Council, in an effort to trim its budget, has cut the salaries of three police officers, Mayor Roy White said Tuesday.
The city council found discrepancies in hours worked for the officers and opted to take their salaries away, leaving only one officer, Police Chief Barry Starnes, on staff as a paid officer. The other three officers have decided to stay on staff on a volunteer basis, White said.
"We started auditing," White said. "We found nothing illegal, but kind of careless bookkeeping."
White said the officers volunteer hours will count toward their certification.
White said "most" of the officers have other jobs. He also said he thought they had allegiances to Starnes so they stayed on as volunteers.
