Work on U.S. 59 Project rescheduled

Posted by Paige Stewart - email

Lufkin, Texas - Night time work slated this week for U.S. 59 at Loop 287 South has been rescheduled for next week due to weather forecasts for rain and snow, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Painters will resume painting underneath the Southbound Direct Connector Bridge Monday through Thursday, February 15 - 18. The job does require closing Loop 287 in both directions from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night.

Also on Monday, February 15, the contractor will close the Southbound Direct Connector Bridge and U.S. 59 northbound from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for the installation of overhead sign bridges across the U.S. 59 mainlanes.

Construction on this $38 million project designed to address mobility and safety concerns along US 59, south of Loop 287 in Lufkin began in April 2008. The contractor, Zachry Construction Corporation of San Antonio, is expected to have all travel lanes of the project open by the end of April, weather permitting. However, other work such as painting, landscaping, etc., will be ongoing.

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes when possible to avoid possible delays during the project, and to also obey all traffic control devices. Remember traffic fines double when workers are present.
