SAN MARCOS, TX (Oklahoma State) - The Oklahoma State softball team run-ruled Texas State 10-0 in five innings and goes into extra innings with New Mexico to win 2-1 in the 10th on Saturday in the CenturyLink Classic.
Hamilton put the Cowgirls on the board with a three-run home run in the first inning. Sophomore Julie Ward followed with a solo home run, her third home run of the season. OSU added two more in the second inning as Mariah Gearhart hit an RBI-single up the middle and Katelyn Bright grounded out to the second baseman to score Kelsey Anchors from third.
Gearhart led off the fourth inning with a single and reached third on a passed ball. She scored as Bright hit a sacrifice fly to center. Hamilton then hit her second home run of the day to bring OSU's run total to eight. Later in the inning, Taylor Marcum hit a two-RBI double.
Senior and former Huntington Lady Devil Anna Whiddon picked up the win as she threw the 1-hitter shutout for the Cowgirls. She went five innings and had six strikeouts.
In the second game of the night against New Mexico, the Lobos scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Jess Lujan-Dresslar started the inning with single up the middle and was advanced to second. She stole third and then scored on a Cowgirl error.
The game continued into extra innings with DeBroeck remaining in the circle for the Lobos and Whiddon coming in to relieve freshman Kat Espinosa in the eighth. However OSU prevailed in the bottom of the 10th as Bright was placed on second per the international tie-breaker rules. She was advanced on a fielder's choice by Hamilton and scored on a sacrifice fly by Megan Castle.
Espinosa started the game for the Cowgirls and threw seven innings, allowed seven hits for one unearned run, walked one and struck out six. Whiddon threw three hitless innings, walked one and struck out four. She picked up her second win of the day and improves to 3-0.
