Wells mayor's resignation second in 6 months

By Jena Johnson - email

WELLS, TX (KTRE) - After being promoted to mayor last August, Roy White resigned last week, the day after a city council meeting.

White said he decided to resign after a disagreement he had with council members over the future of the police department. Council members discovered questionable documents about Police Chief Barry Starnes' record keeping. Council members told White some of the bookkeeping didn't match the monthly report, and they wanted to take action. White says he wanted to investigate before taking action.

The resignation is the second for a Wells mayor within the last six months. Corbitt Doss resigned in August after it was revealed he was a convicted felon. Doss said he resigned at the advice of his attorney and was seeking a pardon so that he could run for mayor again.

Former mayor pro-tem James Booker takes over White's position.
