NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The cheaper alternative to curbside pickup is to add one more collection site. The primary bonus is a more convenient location. City manager Jim Jeffers says it will be, "Somewhere in the city, probably at a grocery store, parking lot. We're still talking to several entities who might be interested in hosting it." The city commission considers the plan Tuesday.
Potential problems can occur at satellite collection points. Primarily, the illegal dumping of items other than cardboard and paper. That's all Nacogdoches accepts until the market for other recyclables improves.
"The proposal is for this station to be manned. And hopefully, we'll find a parking lot that has a camera security system," Jeffers added.
The collection site at the landfill will not go away. That's good news for businesses that use it frequently. "About once a week we bring a full truck load out,' Phil Smith, a Sears sales associate said before throwing large pieces of cardboard into the dumpster.
Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful is wanting residents to develop the same good habit. "We are going to be pushing it as heavily as we can and try to encourage people to use the new program and we're behind the city 100%," Buzz Dutton, KNB director said.
The idea is a pilot program. It will go away if it's not used. The site should be announced within the month.
In the meantime, Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful points those who want to recycle to other solutions. This Saturday from 8am to 12noon, KNB will be a hosting an appliance recycling event. Computer equipment and phones will be collected. No televisions or kitchen appliances can be accepted.
