Lufkin hospital employees recognize Registered Dietitian Day

LUFKIN, TX (News Release) - Empowering people through healthy food choices is just one of the many goals of a registered dietitian.  Memorial Health System of East Texas is recognizing registered dietitians on Registered Dietitian Day, March 10, and  joining them in spreading the message of the importance of developing sound eating and physical activity habits throughout March, National Nutrition Month.

Registered dietitians are experts in food and nutrition.  They are highly trained and are able to help people eat in such a way that they get the most vitamins, minerals and nutrients without too many calories.  In a hospital setting, registered dietitians are known as clinical dietitians and provide nutritional services to patients.

"As registered dietitians, our goal is to help others realize the importance of their food choices," said Tim Scallon, Director of Clinical Nutrition at Memorial Health System of East Texas.  "In fact we need to recognize and celebrate good nutrition everyday because after all a healthy lifestyle is a lifelong pursuit."

During National Nutrition Month, the importance of healthy food choices and physical activity are being stressed by registered dietitians.  A healthy lifestyle begins with small changes that become habit.  Many changes can be made to ones lifestyle by asking simple questions.  How many healthy foods are in my shopping cart?  Are there whole grains on my plate?  How many hours of sitting are in my average day?  Small steps can go a long way in bettering ones overall health.

"Don't forget that improving diet is an ongoing process," said Mr. Scallon.  "Dietitians recommend making one good change at a time and gradually building on the resulting healthy habits during the course of the year."

Mr. Scallon collaborates on Memorial Cooking Innovations monthly by providing healthy tips and information on the foods being prepared. Visit www.memorialhealth.org to watch the programs, print the recipes or see the show schedule for Lufkin Government Access Channel 15.
