U.S. 59 project completion expected at end of April

Lufkin, TexasDespite continuing schedule changes due to weather conditions, all structures on the U.S. 59 Project at Loop 287 South are set to open to traffic by the end of April. The contractor, Zachry Construction Corporation of San Antonio, is more than 8 months ahead of schedule, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

This construction project, designed to address mobility and safety concerns along US 59, south of Loop 287, began in April 2008. Upcoming work (weather permitting) includes the following:

Monday, March 15:

  • Southbound Direct Connector Bridge closed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for removal of barriers and crash cushion on U.S. 59.

Monday/Tuesday, March 15-16:

  • Painting underneath the Southbound Direct Connector Bridge over Loop 287, delayed due to weather conditions, resumes. The job does require closing Loop 287 in both directions from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. Traffic traveling east will use the Houston Exit with re-entry east of Tulane Drive. Westbound traffic will take the Tulane Drive Exit.

Lane Closures:

  • Motorist should expect daily lane closures for varying work for the duration of the project. 

TxDOT, urges motorists to use alternate routes when possible to avoid possible delays during the project, and to also obey all traffic control devices. Remember traffic fines double when workers are present.
