Sam Houston snatches Southland Conference Crown

KATY, TX (KTRE) - The Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks fell to arch rival Sam Houston State Saturday.  They were playing at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy for the Southland Conference Championship and a berth to the conference's NCAA tournament.

The Sam Houston Bearkats came out strong.  They never looked back, taking advantage of poor shooting by SFA in the first half.

Sam Houston stretched its lead with the help of Gilberto Clavell who scored 21 points to drive the Bearkats to an easy finish 64-48 win over SFA and an automatic trip to the NCAA tournament.

It's the first time since 2003 that Sam Houston has made it to the NCAA tourney.
