The Angelina College Lady Roadrunners kept their conference record even at 2-2 following Saturday's doubleheader split with Alvin.
The Lady 'Runners took the opener 3-0 behind clutch pitching from Stacie Tassin, but dropped the nightcap 2-0 when Lady Dolphin pitcher Vianca Pesina put on a pitching clinic.
In Game 1, Tassin played escape artist at times, yet nevertheless finished with a complete-game shutout in AC's 3-0 win. Tassin avoided serious damage after loading the bases in the first and seventh innings, but managed to work her way out of each of those jams – along with a couple of others along the way – by allowing just five hits and striking out five while walking just three Alvin hitters.
Tassin's run support came a singe run at a time: In the bottom of the second, Kayla Johns reached on a single and came around to score on Randi Rascoe's bases-loaded walk. In the third, Lauren Davis led off the inning with a single, moved to second on Sam McCord's sacrifice and scored on Tassin's RBI single.
AC got its last run in the fifth, with McCord reaching via a one-out single and scoring all the way from first on Johns' double to the wall in left center.
Meanwhile, Tassin was enjoying a combination of a wicked screwball and solid defensive plays behind her. When the Lady Dolphins loaded the bases in the first inning with three consecutive singles, AC shortstop Brittani Stone fielded a ground ball and forced the runner at home, and left fielder Lauren Davis made a running catch to end the inning. In the fourth, Davis and Richardson again flashed leather, with Davis making a shoe top catch in left and Richardson diving for a ball in the infield.
The Lady Dolphins' Pesina responded in the second with a seven-inning gem of a shutout of her own. Pesina struck out eight Lady 'Runners, scattering four singles that proved harmless. Even more impressive was Pesina's ability to stay ahead in the count: The right hander from Robstown went to a three-ball count just once all game; and of the 25 AC hitters she faced, was ahead in the count 22 times – 16 of those starting with 0-2 counts.
Offensively, Lady Dolphin Porsha Ramos singled twice and scored both Alvin runs; and Mercedes Adams doubled and singled to drive in Ramos each time.
The Lady Roadrunners (13-9, 2-2) will travel to Shreveport Monday to take on Bossier Parish. Game times for the doubleheader are 2 and 4 p.m.
