NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The 2010 Southland Conference Co-Champion Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team (18-10) will face Creighton in the opening round of the WNIT. The bracket, which was released late Monday evening, has SFA slated to face the Bluejays Friday, but the start time has not yet been determined.
The Ladyjacks recorded a season-best seven-game win streak to close out the regular season and win a share of the conference title, the 15th in program history. Creighton is the runner-up from the Missouri Valley Conference after posting a 20-10 (.667) overall record and going 13-5 (.722) in conference play. The Bluejays advanced to MVC tournament finals before being ousted by Northern Iowa in a thriller, 54-53.
The Ladyjacks are making their third appearance in the WNIT, and their second in the last four years. SFA traveled to Southern Illinois for the opening round of the 2007 WNIT, but the Salukis recorded a 58-50 win in front of the home crowd. SFA is 2-2 (.500) all-time in WNIT games.
SFA leading scorer, and two-time first-team All-SLC selection Whitney Cormier is the lone Ladyjack from the 2007 WNIT tournament team. Cormier scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds against the Salukis.
If the Ladyjacks get past Creighton, they would face the winner of the Kansas/Prairie View A&M game. The Ladyjacks are 10-4 (.714) all-time against the other three teams in their part of the bracket, and 2-2 (.500) all-time against Creighton.
