LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -Some Lufkinites opened their doors to free smoke alarms Monday morning. City employees went door to door in North Lufkin offering to install smoke alarms, check them, or change out the batteries all for free.
The fire department started the Smoke Alarms for Everyone or S.A.F.E. program after a Lufkin man died in a house fire.
Officials said if he would've had a smoke detector, he could have survived. One firefighter said it was an experience he was thrilled to be a part of.
"Just knowing that we might have saved somebody's life if a fire does occur that they might be able to get out safe due to the fire alarms," said Lufkin Firefighter Justin Poiencot.
They gave out about 40 smoke alarms all together Monday. They do want to continue the program, but, for now, if you don't have a smoke alarm you can contact the Lufkin Fire Department.
