Houston County hopes to get a full count in the 2010 census

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Many believed Houston County was undercounted in the 2000 Census.  The return rate was only 56% way less than the state and national return rates.

This year County Judge Lonnie Hunt and other leaders tried to understand why so few returned their census forms ten years ago. They learned Houston County had high numbers of traditionally undercounted groups like senior citizens, minorities and folks with P.O. Boxes. They took all of this into account when getting the word out this time around.

"I think the key has been we started early. People have probably gotten tired of us talking about it. But we started six months ago talking about the census," said Judge Hunt.

Judge Hunt wants Houston County to receive every dollar it has coming to it, and knows that a full count is the only way to make that happen.

He says in 2000 the county lost almost three thousand dollars per uncounted person over the last ten years.
