LUFKIN, TX (News Release) - The City of Lufkin Municipal Court holds several thousand outstanding arrest warrants and, on Friday, April 30, 2010, the Lufkin City Marshal and Officers from the Lufkin Police Department will conduct a Warrant Sweep in an attempt to serve as many of these warrants as possible.

Although a majority of the warrants are for traffic or city ordinance violations, the authorities will serve any outstanding arrest warrant.

The sweep has become an annual event designed to spur those who have outstanding warrants to settle their account.  The sweep last March resulted in the collection of more than four times what they collected in the 2008 raid.  And, while collection rates are improving, the sweeps still fall far short from recovering the four million dollars left to collect from the past decade.

The sweep usually takes about 12 hours to conduct, however, Lufkin City Marshal Brian Smith is encouraging violators to take care of those fines in advance.  "We'd rather them pay and take care of their warrants rather than actually having to go out and go through the process of arresting and taking them to jail."  Smith also said if you have an outstanding warrant you can pay online or over the phone.

Extra police will be assigned to cover the sweep, which is scheduled for April 30th.  If they miss you on that day, your fine doesn't go away, you still are at risk for being arrested at another time.

Persons who have an outstanding warrant are urged to contact Lufkin Municipal Court prior to the Warrant Sweep to voluntarily dispose of their warrant and avoid the inconvenience and embarrassment of arrest at home or at work, in front of family, friends, or co-workers.

"Anyone voluntarily appearing at Lufkin Municipal Court to resolve their warrant WILL NOT be arrested", said Lufkin City Marshal Brian Smith.  Persons with an outstanding warrant should contact the Court as soon as possible because contact with a Police Officer away from the Court will result in the arrest of wanted persons.

All fines can be addressed in-person, by mail, by telephone, or online.  Contact Lufkin Municipal Court personnel for details or assistance concerning warrants or payment of fines.
