LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Tickets are now on sale in nearly every community in Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties for the 2nd Annual KTRE River Rivalry basketball game.
The basketball game, to be held April 22 at Angelina College's Shands Gym, will pit the best seniors in Angelina County against the best seniors in Nacogdoches County in a girls game at 6 p.m. and a boys game at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at $4. If you buy them at the door, tickets are $5. Kids four years and younger get in for free.
Chireno coach Pam Muse, Zavalla's Jan West, Central Heights' Kevin Herron and Hudson's Rob Peterson have agreed to coach the teams.
The River Rivalry will give district foes like Central, Hudson, Huntington and Diboll in Angelina County, as well as district rivals like Garrison, Central Heights and Woden in Nacogdoches County a chance to join forces to fuel a rivalry between Nacogdoches and Angelina County.
At least one senior from every high school in both counties will participate in the game.
The 2009 game, which drew a crowd of about 900, was a sweep for Angelina County as the girls won, 61-49, and the boys won, 72-66.
The game raised more than $3,000, with proceeds going to charities of the games' most valuable players' choices.
Fans will also be entertained with two half-time three-point shooting contests, with the girls' contest during the boys game and the boys' contest during the girls' games. The winners of each contest will then take on each other for the shooting title.
Players from Nacogdoches, Garrison, Central Heights, Woden, Douglass, Martinsville, Cushing and Chireno will represent Nacogdoches County while players from Lufkin, Diboll, Huntington, Hudson, Central and Zavalla will represent Angelina County.
