Officers give free safety tips on proper way to use car seats

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE)- Safety officers say several parents are unknowingly placing their children's car seats in their vehicles incorrectly, putting their little ones at risk.

Thursday afternoon in the Walmart parking lot, Nacogdoches police officers gave families free safety advice in order to make sure car seats are being set up properly, and kids are being buckled up safely.

"Since 1999, we've checked well over 3,000 child safety seats. The misuse rate is just a hair under 100 percent and when I say misuse I mean critical misuses that could cause death or serious bodily injuries," said Randy Hall with the Texas AgriLife Extensions Services.

If you would like to have your kid's car seat inspected, the Nacogdoches and Lufkin police departments say to contact them at anytime to set up a consultation.
