Nacogdoches native Damion James named All-American

Posted: Updated:

University of Texas senior forward Damion James is one of five players to be named to the All-America Third Team by The Associated Press, the wire service announced today. It marked the second All-America honor this season for James, who previously claimed a spot on Sporting News' second team.

James is joined on the AP's third team by Greg Monroe (Georgetown), Cole Aldrich (Kansas), Luke Harangody (Notre Dame) and Darington Hobson (New Mexico). The wire service's five-player first team includes John Wall (Kentucky), DeMarcus Cousins (Kentucky), Evan Turner (Ohio State), Wesley Johnson (Syracuse) and Scottie Reynolds (Villanova), while the second team features James Anderson (Oklahoma State), Sherron Collins (Kansas), Greivis Vasquez (Maryland), Jon Scheyer (Duke) and Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia).

James is the 19th All-American in Texas Basketball history and the seventh player in the 12 years of the Rick Barnes era to earn All-America honors, joining Chris Mihm (consensus first team in 2000), T.J. Ford (consensus first team in 2003), P.J. Tucker (AP and USBWA second team and NABC third team in 2006), LaMarcus Aldridge (NABC third team in 2006), Kevin Durant (consensus first team in 2007) and D.J. Augustin (consensus first team in 2008).

James led the Longhorns in scoring (18.0 ppg), rebounding (10.3 rpg), double-doubles (17), steals (57) and minutes played (30.3 mpg) during the 2009-10 season. He also ranked second on the team in blocked shots (40).

James set Big 12 career records in rebounds (1,318), double-doubles (54) and games started (140) and also established school career records in rebounds, consecutive games played (142) and games started. He finished his career ranked second in UT history in career double-doubles and games played (142), fifth in school history and seventh in Big 12 history in career scoring (1,917 points) and fifth in UT history in career blocked shots (163).
