POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Leggett High School student died Wednesday afternoon following a head-on collision which occurred as she attempted to make a pass in a no-passing zone on State Highway 146 in Polk County, according to a Department of Public Safety report.

Leggett ISD Superintendent Vicki Jones said Amber Nicole Gay, 17, of Livingston, was a junior at the school. Grief counselors are at the school today to offer counseling to students, as they need it.

"She had only been a student here about a year," Jones said. "But she had quite a few friends here and they are very upset about this."

According to the DPS report, Gay was traveling southbound in a 1998 Honda Accord on SH 146, five miles south of U.S. Highway 190, and hit a 2004 Dodge Durango, driven by Gary Paul Criswell, 40, of Thicket, head-on, at about 3:25 p.m.

Criswell and a passenger in Gay's vehicle, James R. Gay, 11, are listed in stable condition at a Houston hospital.
