LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – The U.S. Forest service is telling residents not to be worried about clouds of smoke billowing from area forests.

Prescribed burns are underway right now by fire specialists who only burn under optimal weather conditions.

It all depends on temperature, humidity, and wind direction.

The burns remove undergrowth, to prevent wildfires.

"If that is left unchecked it can build up and build up over the years it can cause a catastrophic fire which would totally kill everything in its path," said Fritz Mueller, Asst. Fire Management Officer.

These prescribed burns actually restore the forests to their natural settings.

The fires will taper-off by the end of the month.
