LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – A new flag is flying over the Angelina County Courthouse and will stay there through the month of April.

The flag commemorates Child Abuse Prevention month. Every April, the Angelina County Child Welfare Group raises the symbolic flag to shed light on child abuse and neglect.

Members of the Alliance for Children and Children's Protective Services staff attended the event this morning wearing blue ribbons. A moment of silence was held in memory of children who have lost their lives from abuse or neglect.

"It's everybody's problem as long as there's any child being neglect or abuse then shame on the rest of us. We've got to get involved. We've got to report it and take the steps to protect our kids," said Wayne Haglund, President of Angelina County Child Welfare Group.

The mission for child abuse prevention month is to keep the public's attention on the on-going problem of child abuse and neglect.
